He stood out, always had. Been told to mold, others said can't so he did. Stand up and out. Courage.
Fear. Not of what others thought of him(let them think what they think). He feared what they would do to him. Would openness be violated? Habits mocked? Preferences ignored? Affections thrown back?
His individuality was not something he lacked courage to express. He hung back and stayed silent because he feared what others would do with it.
